Don ‘Vossie’ Vorster is about to become a first-year student at Stellenbosch University. In a tradition passed down from generation to generation, the oldest son in the Vorster family is given a bow tie when he finishes high school, and it’s Vossie’s turn to receive this great honour.

The transition from home and school to varsity is a big one, and he will need all the nerve in the world to adjust to this new life. His bow tie – a metaphor that gives the men in the Vorster family the mettle to live life to the full – is the one thing that will give the geeky Vossie the courage to stand up for the things he cares about and, hopefully, to find the girl of his dreams.

Spoilt and pampered, Willemien de la Harpe is also on her way to university. Her super wealthy, wine- farming parents send her off in the hope that their daughter will make the right choices in life, which include marrying AJ Blignaut.

One night, Vossie and his new buddies in the Stellenbosch Liberation Front decide to break into the university’s laboratory to free the rats kept for research. Their plans for the evening go awry and Vossie escapes clutching just one rat in his hands. In his attempt to escape the security guards, he hides in a bush. When Vossie hears the sound of someone sobbing, he turns to find Willemien, the most beautiful girl he has ever set eyes on.

How will Vossie convince Willemien – and the De La Harpe family – that he is the right man for her?
